Axis Mundi

From the Oak

Welcome to the From the Oak feature of the Axis Mundi Outer Court website. Here, we feature a number of essays from the organizer of Axis Mundi and the High Priest of the Stone Mountain Coven, Joseph Carriker. We will also feature guest essays from others in our line, Tradition and Craft.

WARNING: If you are looking for the definitive views of the whole of British Traditional Witchcraft, or even of all of the Alexandrian Tradition, you won’t find it here. What you will find is one witch’s understanding of certain concepts, as revealed through the gnosis that comes of praxis-based experience and community.

Enjoy!

Joseph’s Essays

What is British Traditional Witchcraft?

Plenty of people feel they know what Wicca is, but they do not really know about its origins. This essay explores how we define our Craft, from what the British Traditional Crafts have to in common to what sets them apart from other neopagan styles of witchcraft.

By Any Other Name...

Words have meanings, and we don’t always agree what those meanings should be. This essay looks at the British Traditional objection to others’ use of the term “Wicca,” as expressed through the perspective of someone outside of our Craft.

Please note that this can be a sensitive subject for some people. This essay isn’t intended to challenge anyone’s use of terminology - it is simply to express our perspective, and why we might not be meaning the same thing when we say “Wicca.”

The Craft Circle

A look at the Traditional Circle and its role in our practice and faith.

The Rede of the Wica

In an effort to prove we are just as “good” (which is usually the same as saying “harmless”) as Christians, many neopagan witches have turned the Rede into something it was never intended to be. “Harm None” is not only a gross over-simplification of an elegant and sublime concept, but it’s flat out incorrect.

the Threefold Law

Exhortations against using “black magic” nearly always come with the dire warnings of the “Threefold Return” and other concepts - descriptions of an active cosmic force tallying all we do in a ledger, with one finger poised on the “x3” button of the karmic calculator nearby. Here, I touch on what those concepts really mean.
